Bob Weir’s Early Days

Bob Weir, born Robert Hall Weir on October 16, 1947, in San Francisco, California, had a unique start to life. Given up for adoption at birth, he was raised by adoptive parents in Atherton. Now, here’s the thing about Bob—he wasn’t always the smooth guitarist we know today. As a kid, he tried his hand at piano and trumpet but didn’t stick with them. It wasn’t until he was 13 that he picked up the guitar, and that’s when things started to change. Despite his musical talent, school wasn’t his strong suit. Turns out, Bob had undiagnosed dyslexia, which made academics a real struggle. He got kicked out of almost every school he attended. But during one of those school stints, he met John Perry Barlow, who would later become a lyricist for the Grateful Dead. Talk about fate!

The Rise of the Grateful Dead

Now, let’s rewind to New Year’s Eve 1963. Sixteen-year-old Bob Weir walked into a music store and met Jerry Garcia. Neither of them realized it was New Year’s Eve, and Jerry was waiting for his music students. They ended up playing music all night and decided right then and there to start a band. The Beatles were all the rage at the time, and they drew a lot of inspiration from them. After a few name changes, they became the Grateful Dead, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Bob became the rhythm guitarist and handled vocals for the next 30 years of the Grateful Dead’s journey. But it wasn’t always smooth sailing. In 1968, some band members thought Bob “wasn’t pulling his weight musically.” This led to a few concerts without him and keyboardist Ron “Pigpen” McKernan. But they quickly realized they needed Bob and welcomed him back. Bob took this criticism to heart and worked hard to improve his guitar skills. He learned chord voicings and side guitar techniques, impressing the rest of the band with his growth.

In 1972, Bob released his first solo album, titled "Ace," with help from the Grateful Dead. The album featured the single "Playing in the Band," which had already been released on the Grateful Dead's album "Skulls & Roses." During this time, Bob also played with bands like Kingfish and Bobby and the Midnites.

Things kept rolling until Jerry Garcia’s passing in 1995. After that, Bob formed RatDog, a band that mostly covered songs by the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, Willie Dixon, and, of course, the Grateful Dead. Although the Grateful Dead disbanded in the 90s, Bob participated in their reunions from 1998 to 2009, known as “The Dead.”

In 2009, Bob and Phil Lesh formed Furthur, and in 2011, Bob opened his own recording studio called Tamalpais Research Institute. Over the years, he collaborated with the Black Crowes and Jackie Greene while continuing to perform with RatDog. In 2013, Bob faced some health issues, collapsing on stage in New York, which led to a break from live performances. But in 2015, he reunited with the other surviving members of the Grateful Dead for a final performance in Chicago. That same year, he formed Dead & Company with John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, Jeff Chimenti, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann. Dead & Company continued to tour, keeping the Grateful Dead’s spirit alive.

In 2016, Bob was honored with the Les Paul Spirit Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award. He released another solo album titled "Blue Mountain." From 2018 onwards, Bob performed with Phil Lesh and formed yet another band called Bob Weir and Wolf Bros, which performed live until the Covid-19 pandemic hit.

In 2020, the home he bought for his biological father in Mill Valley, California, hit the market for $1.395 million after his father passed away. Bob owns another home in the area, along with a vacant lot. He also has a place over the hill in Stinson Beach and a property in Menlo Park, near where he grew up.
