Adebayo's Presidential Ambition: Ready to Step Aside for the Right Candidate

Let’s talk about some big moves in Nigerian politics. The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, recently made waves when he said he’s willing to step aside in the 2027 election if someone better comes along. That’s right, folks—Adebayo isn’t just focused on his own ambition; he’s thinking about what’s best for the nation. This was shared during an engaging interview on the Sunday edition of Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, a popular socio-political show on Channels Television.

Here’s the thing: Adebayo is working hard for his presidential bid in 2027, but he’s realistic about the uncertainties of life. As he puts it, “God is the author of tomorrow,” and who knows what the future holds? He’s open to the idea that another candidate might emerge who’s even more qualified to lead Nigeria. Adebayo wants nothing to stand in the way of progress for the country. He said, “Everybody knows that I have an aspiration. I’m working on it, but God is the author of tomorrow; we don’t even know who is going to be around in 2027.”

Prioritizing Nigeria’s Future Over Personal Ambition

When you think about it, Adebayo’s attitude is refreshing in today’s political climate. He emphasized that his personal ambition shouldn’t overshadow the greater good. “It is my prayer to God that if there is a person who God thinks is better than me to fix the problem of Nigeria, my ambition should not stop that person because we want a country that works,” he stated. This shows a level of humility and commitment to the nation that’s truly commendable.

  • The SDP isn’t just about putting forward any candidate—they’re aiming high. Adebayo reiterated the party’s dedication to providing Nigerians with someone they can genuinely be proud of. This candidate would need to have the capability to challenge President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming presidential election. He boldly declared, “We will give Nigerians a candidate that all citizens would be proud of and be ready to give a chance to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the next presidential election.”

SDP’s Stance on Religion and Ethnicity in Politics

Now, let’s talk about something critical in Nigerian politics: religion and ethnicity. Adebayo acknowledged the sensitive nature of these issues and how they’ve become increasingly explosive over time. He’s clear that the SDP won’t engage in divisive tactics. He explained, “What used to be an easy discussion—with religion and ethnicity—has become explosive now. So, we will not use the SDP forum to try to bifurcate our people into different zones.”

The SDP leader emphasized the party’s vision of unity. Their goal is to create a system where their chosen candidate brings people together and garners widespread approval. Adebayo said, “What we are looking for now is a system where when we make a choice in the SDP, there will be resounding joy outside the SDP and Nigerians will say: ‘Okay, finally, this platform has given the country a chance.’”

This approach shows that the SDP is focused on building bridges rather than walls, aiming for a Nigeria where everyone feels included and represented. It’s a bold move, and it could be exactly what the country needs moving forward.
