Anderson Cooper's Take On The Rivers State Political Drama

Former Head of Civil Service Speaks Out on Rivers State's Political Crisis
Let me set the scene for you. In a dramatic turn of events in Nigeria's Rivers State, the immediate past Head of Civil Service, Dr. George Nweke, has opened up about the political chaos that has been rocking the region. Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt last Friday, Nweke didn't mince words when he pointed fingers at suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who he claims masterminded a series of actions that almost plunged the state into anarchy. This isn’t just political drama—it’s a story about power, sabotage, and the delicate balance between state and federal authority.
Now, let’s rewind a bit. Dr. Nweke, who was appointed by Governor Fubara himself, is now accusing the same leader of orchestrating the destruction of public assets and plotting moves that could have destabilized the entire state. But here’s the twist: he insists his resignation was entirely voluntary. No pressure, no firing, just a decision made from the heart. He even took a moment to thank the governor for giving him the opportunity to serve, which sounds like a polite way of saying, "Thanks for the gig, but I'm out."
In his own words, Nweke said, “You would recall that I was appointed as the Head of Service by our suspended governor, Siminalayi Fubara. Let me also use this opportunity to appreciate him for giving me the opportunity to serve.” But then, he added, “With the loads of misinformation on print and electronic media, I have chosen to put the record straight. I was not sacked, neither was I pressured to resign—I did it willingly from the depth of my heart.”

Why Did Nweke Decide to Speak Out?
Nweke explained that his decision to speak wasn’t just about clearing his name. As someone who worked closely with Governor Fubara, he felt a moral obligation to address the alarming situation unfolding in the state. “It will be unfair for me to keep silent or not to address some key factors that have affected or will affect our state if we continue on this trajectory,” he emphasized.
And boy, did he address those factors. Nweke went on to praise President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decisive move to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State, a decision that was later ratified by the National Assembly. He argued that without President Tinubu’s intervention, the state could have spiraled into chaos, with economic sabotage and widespread unrest. “If not for the intervention of Mr. President, Nigeria would have faced the worst economic sabotage and Rivers State would have been up in flames,” Nweke passionately declared.
Unveiling the Allegations Against Governor Fubara
But the real bombshell came when Nweke recounted the events leading up to the crisis. He accused Governor Fubara of instructing his then-Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, to burn down the Rivers State House of Assembly complex. According to Nweke, this was a desperate attempt to thwart an impeachment attempt. He claimed that he was present during a meeting where a bag of money was handed over to Edison for this operation, though he admitted he didn’t know the exact amount inside.
“First, it all started with the Rivers State House of Assembly where the Governor, Siminilayi Fubara directed his Chief of Staff (Edison Ehie) to burn down the Assembly in a way to avert his impeachment,” Nweke revealed. He added, “I was there with them when a bag of money was handed over to Edison for that operation, though I do not know the amount inside.”
Nweke didn’t stop there. He accused Fubara of orchestrating further destruction, including plans to demolish the residential quarters of Assembly members. He said, “I want to tell Rivers people today that the House of Assembly complex in Moscow Road was clearly brought down by Edison Ehie under the instructions of Governor Siminilayi Fubara. I challenge him to an open confrontation and I will throw more light on it.”
This incident, Nweke admitted, almost drove him to resign. “A day after that incident, I almost resigned but I was very scared because I know the power of a sitting governor and he knew that I am aware of the whole plan,” he confessed.

Unresolved Threats and a Plea for Continued Federal Involvement
Nweke warned that despite the emergency declaration, significant threats to peace and stability in Rivers State remain unresolved. He urged President Tinubu to stay actively involved in the region’s affairs, emphasizing the potential dangers that could arise if the federal government backs off too soon.
He also criticized Governor Fubara for making reckless political calculations tied to national elections. Nweke recounted a conversation where Fubara allegedly boasted about using the Ijaws to influence the next presidential election. “One of the factors that got me removed was when Governor Fubara told me that they will use the Ijaws to decide who will become the next president of Nigeria,” Nweke revealed. He continued, “He clearly told me that he is the chief security officer of Rivers State and his brother is in charge of Bayelsa State and all the pipelines are under their care, that at the appropriate time they will tell the boys what to do and fund was not an issue.”
Nweke concluded by warning that the sinister plans brewing in the background could still affect innocent people. “If the President did not take proactive steps, no one knows who would have been affected by the sinister plans that were cooking,” he cautioned.
As the political drama in Rivers State unfolds, one thing is certain: this is far from over. The question now is, how will the federal government ensure lasting stability in the region, and will Governor Fubara face accountability for the allegations against him? Stay tuned, because this story is just getting started.
