EFCC Clarifies Probes On Aisha Achimugu: No Links To Atiku Or Sanwo-Olu

EFCC Denies Involvement of Atiku and Sanwo-Olu in Aisha Achimugu's Case

Let me break this down for you. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has stepped forward to clear the air regarding allegations that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu are somehow tied to the ongoing investigation of Nigerian businesswoman Aisha Achimugu. This clarification comes after Atiku himself claimed that EFCC was probing him concerning certain financial activities involving Sanwo-Olu. But here’s the thing—EFCC’s statement makes it crystal clear that this is simply not the case.

EFCC’s Statement on the Matter

According to the EFCC’s Head of Media & Publicity, Dele Oyewale, Achimugu is being investigated strictly for alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering. There is absolutely no connection to Atiku or Sanwo-Olu, contrary to what some might speculate. This investigation has been ongoing since 2022, and the EFCC has declared Achimugu as a wanted individual due to these allegations. The anti-graft agency emphasized its commitment to being non-partisan and non-sectarian, assuring the public that its operations are rooted in professionalism, free from political influence or bias.

Legal Proceedings Surrounding the Case

Now, here’s where it gets a little more complicated. Back in 2022, Achimugu took legal action by approaching the court to obtain an injunction that would prevent the EFCC from arresting, investigating, or detaining her for any alleged criminal activities. However, this injunction didn’t last long. On February 19, 2025, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja vacated the injunction, ruling that no court has the authority to interfere with the investigative powers of law enforcement agencies such as the Police or EFCC when there’s reasonable suspicion of a crime or sufficient evidence pointing to an offense.

  • The court went further, upholding an interim order of forfeiture for assets suspected to be proceeds of crime. It dismissed Achimugu’s lawsuit against the EFCC, declaring it without merit. This legal development underscores the legitimacy of EFCC’s investigation, reinforcing that their case against Achimugu is purely based on allegations of criminal activity and not influenced by political affiliations or motives.

    EFCC’s Commitment to Professionalism

The EFCC has made it abundantly clear that their investigations into Aisha Achimugu have absolutely no ties to any political figures, including Atiku Abubakar or Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The Commission is resolute in its stance, stating that their work is non-partisan and non-sectarian. They urge the public to maintain trust in their professionalism and not to attribute any extraneous motives or considerations to their operations. This assurance is crucial in maintaining the integrity and independence of the EFCC, as they continue to combat financial crimes and uphold justice in Nigeria.

In summary, the EFCC’s actions and statements are designed to ensure transparency and fairness in their investigations. They are determined to tackle financial crimes head-on, regardless of who might be involved, without letting politics get in the way. It’s all about the facts, the law, and ensuring accountability across the board.
