El-Rufai's Move Sparks Controversy: SDP Chairman Speaks Out

SDP Chairman Raises Red Flags on Nigeria's Democratic Path
Let me break this down for you. The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, isn’t holding back when it comes to President Bola Tinubu’s administration. In a candid interview with Vanguard, he laid out some serious concerns about how democracy is faring under the current leadership. He’s saying that some of the most basic principles of democracy are being overlooked, and that’s not something we can ignore.
A Closer Look at the Issues
When you sit down and think about what democracy really means, it’s all about making sure people feel safe and secure. That’s exactly what Gabam pointed out. He emphasized that the government hasn’t been able to keep its citizens safe, and that’s a big deal. He didn’t mince words when he said, “In every democracy, not just Bola’s, it’s all about the safety of life and properties of Nigerians. If you take a look at the stats, it’s clear the government hasn’t done enough to maintain law and order in the country.”
Now, while it’s true that there’s been a drop in kidnappings, Gabam isn’t letting anyone off the hook. He’s asking tough questions about whether a government that can’t provide basic things like food and justice can really claim to be democratic. He said, “There are areas where you can say there are improvements. The number of kidnappings has dropped, but it hasn’t stopped. In a nation that can’t feed its own citizens, you’re talking about democracy? What’s the real definition of government here? In a nation where the judiciary hands down judgments based on what they feel is right, rather than sticking to the facts, how can we call that fair?”

Pointing Fingers at the National Assembly
Gabam didn’t stop there. He also took aim at the National Assembly, saying they haven’t been doing their job properly. He explained, “In a nation where the strongest arm of government, the National Assembly, isn’t meeting the expectations of Nigerians, they’re going outside their own rules to conduct business without thinking about the bigger picture or the impact on the nation.”
He went on to say that under Tinubu’s leadership, the core elements of democracy have been eroded. He stated, “I think almost every factor that defines democracy has been violated under the Tinubu government. We’re talking about human rights abuses, intimidation, and harassment. This is the reality we’re facing, and it’s something we need to address head-on.”
So, there you have it. Shehu Gabam is making it clear that the state of democracy in Nigeria is something we should all be paying attention to. These aren’t just political talking points; they’re real concerns that affect every Nigerian. As the conversation continues, it’s crucial that we stay informed and engaged.
