Calling for Lasting Recognition: Gani Adams Champions Humphrey Nwosu's Legacy

Listen up, folks. Iba Gani Adams, the respected Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, is making some noise about something that really matters. He's stepping up to the plate and urging the Nigerian government to honor the late Humphrey Nwosu, the former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC). This isn't just any call—it's a significant one because it comes after the Senate rejected a motion to immortalize this electoral giant.

Why Humphrey Nwosu Deserves More Than Just a Mention

Let me paint a clearer picture for you. In a heartfelt statement, Gani Adams made a compelling argument. He emphasized that Nwosu played a pivotal role in delivering the legendary June 12, 1993 Presidential election. This election wasn't just any ordinary event; it was globally recognized as the freest and fairest election in Nigeria's history. So, according to Adams, it's high time we immortalize Nwosu for his unparalleled contribution.

Building Bridges for Future Electoral Integrity

Gani Adams isn't just stopping at recognition. He's also urging the Nigerian government to go a step further by naming a monument after Nwosu. Why? Well, he believes it would set a fantastic precedent for future INEC chairmen. Adams suggests that if they see this example, they'll be inspired to uphold honesty in their roles when tasked with organizing elections in Nigeria.

Now, let’s dive deeper into what Adams has to say. He insists that recognizing Nwosu is not just about honoring a man—it’s about acknowledging the foundation of free and fair elections in Nigeria. Here's what he had to say: "It is very important that Nwosu should be recognized. The genesis of having a free and fair election—the foundation of the celebrated June 12, 1993 elections—was laid by having a sincere NEC chairman like Nwosu."

Adams continued, "Nwosu conducted a free and fair election that gave Aare MKO Abiola the mandate that the Nigerian government at the time refused to honor by not installing him as president. The respect and the glory that Aare MKO Abiola enjoys today is a direct result of the honesty displayed by the then NEC chairman and his team. They made it happen."

He added, "If Abiola could be honored by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018, then Humphrey Nwosu must definitely be immortalized. At the very least, there should be a monument named after him. This would encourage other INEC chairmen to be honest in their roles, ensuring integrity in Nigerian elections."

    A Warning to the Nation

Gani Adams is not one to mince words. He stressed that denying Nwosu the honor he deserves would not sit well with his spirit. Adams believes that "his spirit will not be happy with Nigeria" if nothing is done to recognize his legacy. He further criticized Yorubas who might resist immortalizing Nwosu, warning that such an attitude would amount to selfishness and short-sightedness.

This call to action is more than just a plea—it’s a reminder of the importance of honoring those who have laid the groundwork for Nigeria's democratic journey. By recognizing Humphrey Nwosu, we honor not just a man but the values of integrity, honesty, and fairness that he championed during one of Nigeria's most pivotal moments in history.
