Concerns Mount Over Violence in Rivers State

The president of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), Prof. Benjamin Okaba, has sounded the alarm over the escalating violence in Rivers State. This alarming situation includes the destruction of pipelines and the declaration of a state of emergency. According to Naija News, Okaba believes these acts are not random but part of a calculated "grand plan" to destabilize the region for political leverage.

In a revealing interview with Saturday Vanguard, Okaba laid out his concerns, accusing certain groups of orchestrating the pipeline explosions to justify the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. "Our findings indicate that the pipeline attacks were meticulously planned to provide an excuse for Governor Fubara’s suspension," Okaba explained. "If the goal was to cause chaos, why haven’t there been more attacks since the declaration? The truth is, they've achieved their objective, so there’s no need for further action," he added.

The INC is determined to get to the bottom of these events. "This is not just about political maneuvering; it's about justice," Okaba stressed. "The Ijaw community will not stay silent. We are committed to uncovering the truth and will share our findings soon. If necessary, we'll pursue legal action to address this injustice," he declared.

Governor Fubara's Efforts Before the Crisis

Okaba also highlighted that Governor Fubara had already begun rebuilding the House of Assembly before the state of emergency was declared. He criticized the federal government for its handling of the situation, particularly the accusations against militants for the pipeline attacks. "The government’s quick assumption that militants are responsible is inconsistent and premature," Okaba said. "We urge the federal government to conduct a thorough, impartial investigation to identify the real culprits before taking drastic measures."

Okaba further warned President Tinubu against making hasty decisions that could undermine the goodwill he has earned in the South-South region. "Suspending a governor based on hearsay isn't good governance," he argued. "We need a comprehensive assessment of the issues and well-thought-out actions to ensure stability in the region."

Call for Presidential Intervention and Mediation

Prof. Okaba emphasized the need for President Tinubu to intervene and mediate in the crisis. "We need a high-powered committee of former presidents and vice presidents to step in and resolve this situation. President Tinubu must withdraw the state of emergency, instruct Governor Fubara and former Governor Wike to halt all ongoing legal battles, and prohibit them from making public statements about the crisis," he suggested.

Okaba also expressed concerns about the federal government’s response to the Supreme Court's ruling on the state budget. "The Supreme Court ruled that if the executive submits a budget and the legislature approves it, the governor can legally spend funds. However, the federal government’s appointment of a sole administrator and subsequent release of funds without considering the judiciary’s decision sets a dangerous precedent," he remarked.

Broad-Based Discontent Across Nigeria

The INC has joined forces with prominent Nigerians, including former President Goodluck Jonathan and Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, who have described the state of emergency and Governor Fubara’s suspension as "executive rascality, abuse of power, and a breach of the Nigerian Constitution." "The widespread criticism reflects the dissatisfaction of many Nigerians with how the federal government is handling the situation in Rivers State. It’s crucial that we reassess our approach to ensure justice, equity, and stability," Okaba said.

Okaba reiterated the INC's commitment to resolving the political crisis fairly and justly. "This is not just about Governor Fubara," he concluded. "It’s about every citizen of Rivers State who participated in a democratic election. We must uphold justice, equity, and the preservation of democratic values."
