Tinubu Faces Criticism Over France Trip - Ameh and Sowore React

Ameh and Sowore Criticize Tinubu's France Visit

Well, here we are again, talking about yet another controversial move by President Bola Tinubu. This time, it's his decision to jet off to France for what's being called a "working visit." But not everyone's buying that explanation. In fact, some pretty vocal critics, like Peter Ameh, the National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), and Omoyele Sowore, the former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), aren't holding back their thoughts.

Naija News broke the story when Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced on Wednesday that Tinubu would be heading to France. The official line? It's a working retreat where the President will take stock of his administration's progress and plan for the future. Sounds impressive, right? But let's dive deeper.

What's Supposedly Happening in France?

According to the official statement, while in France, President Tinubu will evaluate the achievements of his administration at the midpoint of his term. He'll also review ongoing reforms and engage in strategic planning to set the stage for the second anniversary of his administration. The statement emphasized that this period of reflection will guide the government's efforts to deepen reforms and accelerate national development priorities in the coming year.

  • But not everyone's convinced that this trip is all it's cracked up to be. Peter Ameh, for instance, has some serious doubts about the President's energy and commitment to leading the country. He questioned the rationale behind a two-week absence without clear evidence of how it benefits Nigeria. Ameh took to his 𝕏 handle to express his concerns, stating, "Which President leaves his country for two weeks without any tangible proof that the journey will contribute to the nation's development? Our President has no energy to run this country."

Sowore Weighs In: Medical Care or Working Visit?

And then there's Omoyele Sowore, the human rights activist and former presidential candidate, who isn't buying the "working visit" narrative either. Sowore believes the trip is actually for medical care, dismissing the official explanation as a cover-up. In a post on his 𝕏 handle, he wrote, "Bola Ahmed Tinubu has fled Nigeria again to France, for medical care, although some liars in his office claim he is on a ‘working visit’. It's troubling to know that approximately 200 million Nigerians may be repeatedly subjected to misinformation disseminated on a daily basis, and they in turn do nothing to liberate themselves."

As the debate rages on, one thing is clear: the President's France trip has sparked a lively conversation about leadership, transparency, and the future of Nigeria. Whether it's a strategic retreat or something else entirely, only time will tell what this trip truly means for the country and its people.
