Wike's Actions Ignite Controversy Among Ijaw People

Ijaw National Congress President Stands Firm Against Wike's Rally in Bayelsa
Naija News brings you the latest developments as the President General of the Ijaw National Congress (IJC), Benjamin Okaba, voices strong opposition against any rally for former Governor Nyesom Wike in Bayelsa State. According to Okaba, the former Governor of Rivers State has repeatedly insulted the cultural sensitivities of the Ijaw people, making such an event unacceptable. This stance aligns with Governor Douye Diri’s position, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and order in the region.
Why the Ijaw People Are United Against Wike’s Presence
In a candid interview with Arise News, Benjamin Okaba shared his concerns about the potential rally, stating that Bayelsa holds a sacred place in the hearts of the Ijaw community. He emphasized that Wike's past actions have deeply offended the Ijaw people, and as such, they cannot allow him to desecrate their land. The Ijaw people view Bayelsa as a cultural and spiritual hub, akin to Ife for the Yoruba people—a place that must be respected and preserved.
Okaba also dismissed claims made by George Turnah, the Convener of New Associates for Wike, who suggested that the rally was a legitimate political gathering. According to Okaba, the group is nothing more than a front sponsored by Wike himself, with the sole aim of seizing power at all costs. He stressed that while everyone has the constitutional right to gather, security concerns must take precedence, especially in a region as sensitive as Bayelsa.

Understanding the Historical Context
Okaba delved into the history of Wike’s political strategies, recalling how two years before the governorship elections in Rivers State, Wike introduced a political brand known as the Grassroots Democratic Movement (GDN). He argued that this movement, along with the New Associates for Wike (NEW), is a deceptive attempt to manipulate public opinion. "It’s all part of a larger scheme to capture power by any means necessary," Okaba explained, highlighting the desperation behind these efforts.
He further elaborated on the significance of Governor Douye Diri’s decision to declare the rally inappropriate at this time. "Governor Diri acted in the best interest of the nation. If we allow Wike to bring his divisive rhetoric into Bayelsa, we risk repeating the chaos seen in Abalama. We cannot let that happen," Okaba warned. He added that the Ijaw National Congress cannot guarantee the safety of anyone involved in such a program, given the demeaning words and actions Wike has directed towards the Ijaw people.
Addressing Wike’s Provocative Statements
Okaba specifically addressed Wike’s inflammatory remarks, including his references to Pa Clark and the use of the term "asawana." He clarified that "asawana" is not a love song but rather a phrase with deep cultural implications that should not be used casually. "For those of us who understand its meaning, it’s clear that Wike is deliberately provoking us," Okaba stated. He urged the Ijaw people to let the gods handle this matter but warned that any attempt to impose Wike’s agenda on them will not go unchallenged.
Ultimately, Okaba emphasized the importance of unity and vigilance among the Ijaw people. "We must stand together to protect our land and our dignity. Wike’s actions have shown that he does not have the best interests of the Niger Delta or the Ijaw people at heart. Let’s not fall for his tricks," he concluded. This message resonates with many in the Ijaw community, who are determined to safeguard their cultural heritage and political autonomy.
