Speaking at the 6th International Conference on Communication and Development in Africa, held at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the pivotal role the government must play in addressing migration issues. The conference, themed 'Japa: Communicating Migration, Diaspora and Africa’s Development,' brought together academics, policymakers, and media professionals to delve into the complexities of migration and explore ways to enhance diaspora engagement.

The NiDCOM Chairman highlighted the alarming trend of Nigerians leaving the country in search of better opportunities, a phenomenon that has significant implications for national development. However, she believes this trend can be reversed with the right policies. Represented by the Commission's Secretary, Sule Yakubu Bassi, Dabiri-Erewa passionately advocated for reframing the narrative from brain drain to brain gain and brain circulation. "We need to ask ourselves critical questions," she said. "How can governments communicate migration policies more effectively? What role does the media play in shaping the conversation? How can the diaspora contribute beyond remittances? And what policies will inspire skilled Nigerians to return home?"

While acknowledging the substantial financial contributions of the diaspora—injecting approximately $90 billion into Nigeria’s economy over the past five years—Dabiri-Erewa urged for a broader involvement beyond monetary support. She emphasized the importance of encouraging Nigerians abroad to contribute through investments, mentorship, and skills transfer. "We need to harness the potential of our diaspora community to drive development," she noted. Binta Adamu Bello, the Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), represented by Director Legal Ijeoma Amugo, warned against the dangers of irregular migration and human trafficking. "Migration should never come at the cost of one’s safety and dignity," she cautioned. Meanwhile, Zissmos Vergos, Deputy Head of Delegation for the European Union and ECOWAS, underscored the importance of structured migration that benefits all parties involved. He urged the media to help dispel unrealistic expectations about life abroad, emphasizing the need for honest and transparent communication.

Prof. Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, acknowledged the growing number of young Africans seeking better opportunities abroad.
