APC's Felix Morka Hits Out at Suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara

In a recent interview on Eagle 102.5 FM, the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Felix Morka, didn't hold back when discussing the actions of the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara. According to Morka, Fubara’s behavior has been nothing short of a slap in the face to the principles of democracy. This comes amid the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, which has sparked widespread debate across the country.

Morka’s comments come as a response to the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, a move that has polarized opinions among Nigerians. He argued that many of those chiming in on the issue are speaking from a place of political bias, failing to see the bigger picture. According to Morka, Fubara has consistently made undemocratic decisions since taking office, undermining the very foundations of democracy that Nigeria has worked so hard to build.

Why Didn’t Peter Obi Speak Up?

Morka also expressed frustration with the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, questioning why he failed to take a stand against Fubara’s actions. Specifically, he pointed to an earlier attempt by the suspended governor to abolish the state legislature, a move that could have severely undermined the checks and balances vital to any functioning democracy. “Where was Peter Obi’s voice when Fubara tried to dismantle the state legislature?” Morka asked rhetorically.

  • “Everyone commenting has been speaking from a place of political bias; they’re not being objective,” Morka emphasized. “If they had been objective, I bet that I would have been invited to discuss the protracted actions of Governor Fubara in desecrating democracy. He was slapping democracy in the face by his actions.”

He went on to elaborate, “Shortly after he was elected into office, he moved to replace the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who was also elected like him. When his attempt to remove the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, failed, the governor pulled down the Assembly complex, effectively stalling legislative activities in the state. Yet none of these so-called opposition voices made high-sounding speeches or commentaries. Peter Obi did not say a word while Fubara sought to abolish the state legislature. He then proceeded to freeze every flow of money.”

    Defending the State of Emergency

Morka was quick to defend the state of emergency declared by President Tinubu, asserting that the move was entirely within the framework of Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution. This section grants the President the power to declare a state of emergency in situations where there are severe threats to national security or governance. According to Morka, intelligence reports indicated rising security risks, including threats to critical oil infrastructure in Rivers State, following the reported vandalism of the Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP), one of the largest pipelines in Nigeria.

Morka further explained that the declaration of the state of emergency was not a unilateral decision made by the President alone. It was later ratified by a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly, underscoring the collective decision-making process involved. “The National Assembly is a multi-partisan body, not just an APC, PDP, or Labour Party assembly. It is the assembly of all parties with elected representatives. Together, having considered all the information available to them, they approved the President’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State,” Morka said.

As the nation continues to grapple with the implications of this decision, Morka’s comments serve as a reminder of the complexities involved in maintaining democracy and ensuring good governance, especially in the face of significant security challenges.
