EX-Minister Nweke, IPOB's Lawyer Call Out Senator Nwaebonyi For Comments On Ezekwesili

Criticism Heats Up: Ex-Minister and IPOB Lawyer Demand Apology from Senator
Former Minister of Information, Frank Nweke Jr., and Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), have spoken out, urging Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi to issue an apology for his harsh remarks directed at Oby Ezekwesili. The controversy arose during a heated Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges hearing. This session was centered on Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan's allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Naija News reported the tense exchange between Ezekwesili and Senator Nwaebonyi, which unfolded on Tuesday. Ezekwesili, a former Minister of Education, was vocal in her demands for accountability from public officials. Her stance sparked a backlash from Senator Nwaebonyi, leading to an intense verbal confrontation.
Former Minister Nweke's Reaction: Accountability and Respect
Nweke expressed his deep disapproval of the Senator's conduct, stating that Ezekwesili, like any Nigerian citizen, has every right to question and demand accountability from those in public office. He emphasized that such aggressive behavior not only undermines the role of women in leadership but also reflects poorly on how male public officials perceive women in post-election Nigeria.

Nweke elaborated further, saying, “I am genuinely disturbed by the language Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi used against Oby Ezekwesili during the hearing. No woman—or any citizen—should be subjected to harassment or dehumanization for simply demanding accountability. This is a fundamental duty of engaged citizenship, and public officials should remember that our children are watching their actions and learning from them.”
He continued, “As men—fathers, husbands, brothers, and sons—we must all feel outraged by such disrespectful behavior in public forums. The increasing dysfunction in our institutions is detrimental to society and erodes participatory democracy. It’s time for change, and accountability must be at the forefront of this transformation.”
IPOB Lawyer Ejiofor Calls for Disciplinary Action
Ejiofor weighed in on the matter, urging the Senate leadership to take swift and decisive action against Senator Nwaebonyi for his misconduct. He stressed the importance of upholding respect, integrity, and accountability in legislative proceedings.
In a strongly worded statement, Ejiofor said, “Witnessing Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi’s verbal assault on Madam Oby Ezekwesili, a respected former Minister of Education, was deeply disappointing. No public official, particularly one entrusted with legislative responsibilities, should engage in such behavior. This is unacceptable, and in a society where accountability is prioritized, Senator Nwaebonyi would already face serious consequences, including suspension.”
He added, “How have we allowed such behavior to persist? Posterity will judge these actions harshly. The Senate leadership must act decisively to address this misconduct. Senator Nwaebonyi’s bias against Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is so evident that he should be disqualified from participating in any related deliberations or inquiries. His actions reflect poorly on the institution of the Senate.”
Ejiofor concluded, “The Senate must step up and confront this culture of impunity head-on. The Nigerian people deserve a legislature that champions respect, integrity, and accountability. It’s time for a change, and it starts with holding those in power accountable for their actions.”
