Gowon Applauds NYSC’s Role In Unity, Job Creation, Youth Empowerment

General Gowon Celebrates NYSC's Unwavering Commitment to National Unity

Let me tell you something about the man who started it all—General Yakubu Gowon, the former Head of State and founder of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Recently, he took some time out to give major props to the NYSC for keeping the dream alive for more than fifty years. That’s right, folks—half a century of fostering unity, creating jobs, and empowering our youth. And believe me, this is no small feat.

According to Naija News, General Gowon shared these heartfelt words during a visit from Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, the newly appointed Director-General of NYSC. The meeting happened at Gowon’s cozy Asokoro residence in Abuja, where the two leaders had a candid conversation about the future of the program.

From Skepticism to Success: The NYSC Journey

Now, here’s the backstory. When NYSC first launched back in 1973, it wasn’t exactly met with open arms. In fact, Nigerian students were pretty vocal about their opposition. Can you imagine that? But General Gowon, being the visionary he is, stood firm and believed in the power of the program. And guess what? He was absolutely right. Over the years, NYSC has not only overcome that early resistance but has blossomed into a cornerstone of national unity, cultural integration, job creation, and youth empowerment across Nigeria.

  • In a statement released by the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations for NYSC, Caroline Embu, Gowon expressed his admiration for how the program has evolved. He said, “When we started NYSC, there was so much skepticism. Nigerian students didn’t think it would work, but look at us now. We’ve turned a once-controversial idea into a celebrated institution that brings our people together.”

He went on to highlight the multi-dimensional contributions of Corps Members to national development over the past fifty years. “These young men and women have been instrumental in shaping the future of our country. They’ve brought fresh ideas, energy, and dedication to every corner of Nigeria,” Gowon added.

Deploying Diversity: A Key to Success

One of the things Gowon praised most was NYSC’s deployment policy. You see, the program doesn’t just send young people to any old place—they make sure Corps Members are posted to states and regions outside their own. This exposure to different cultures and communities is a game-changer. It helps break down barriers and fosters understanding among Nigerians from all walks of life. As Gowon put it, “By exposing Corps Members to the rich diversity of our nation, we’re building bridges that will last for generations.”

He also encouraged Brigadier General Nafiu to build on the successes of his predecessors. “This program has come so far, but there’s always room for improvement. I have faith that under your leadership, NYSC will continue to grow and achieve even greater heights,” Gowon said.

A Divine Project: Brigadier General Nafiu’s Response

Brigadier General Nafiu couldn’t agree more. He described NYSC as “a divine project that has been a significant blessing to the country.” Expressing his gratitude to General Gowon for his unwavering support, Nafiu added, “Your vision has laid the foundation for everything we do today. I would be honored to have your guidance as we move forward and take NYSC to the next level.”

So there you have it, folks. A program born out of vision and determination, now thriving as a beacon of hope and unity in Nigeria. Here’s to many more years of success for the National Youth Service Corps!
