Senator Usman Calls for Prosecution of Julius Abure

Let’s talk about the storm brewing in Nigeria’s Labour Party. The National Caretaker Committee, led by Senator Esther Nanedi Usman, is making waves by demanding that Julius Abure, along with some key national officers, face charges of perjury, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. This is more than just a political spat—it’s a battle that could define the party’s future. The committee insists that these allegations must be addressed in court, no matter how uncomfortable it might get.

Now, here’s the kicker: this latest development is just another chapter in the ongoing saga that’s been rocking one of Nigeria’s leading opposition parties. The Labour Party has been under scrutiny, and these recent moves by Senator Usman have added fuel to the fire. It’s like a political drama series where every episode brings new twists and turns.

Prince Dandy Rowland, Chairman of the Nigerian Corruption Watch, was the one to break the news at a press conference in Abuja on Monday. Speaking on behalf of the LP caretaker chairman, he revealed that the committee has accused Abure of making bold claims that no one can prosecute him as long as his sister holds the position of Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Justice in Abuja. That’s a pretty bold statement, don’t you think?

Senator Usman has voiced her confusion about why Julius Abure and his associates haven’t been brought to justice, despite a clear directive from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to prosecute them. In her statement, Usman praised the Commissioner of Police, Legal Prosecution Section, who forwarded a case diary to the Attorney General of the Federation on October 25, 2023. The IGP authorized the prosecution of Julius Abure, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, Ojukwu Clement, and Edward Nkwegu for perjury, forgery, and criminal conspiracy.

According to Usman, documents uploaded to the INEC Portal for the 2023 Ebonyi State gubernatorial elections revealed that Abure and Ibrahim forged a court order. This illegal move allegedly removed Oko Eze, the party’s validly nominated gubernatorial candidate, even after the Supreme Court confirmed his candidacy. It’s a situation that raises serious questions about transparency and accountability within the party.

    President Tinubu Under Pressure

Senator Usman also pointed a finger at President Bola Tinubu, suggesting that the administration’s stance—or lack thereof—on corruption might embolden individuals like Abure. She expressed concerns that anti-corruption circles are growing increasingly uneasy about the President’s apparent reluctance to address these issues head-on.

Usman stated that the suspects, particularly Abure, have been openly bragging that as long as his sister remains the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Justice, no one can touch him or his accomplices. It’s a claim that has many scratching their heads and wondering if there’s more to the story than meets the eye.

    Obiora Ifoh: The Counterargument

Not everyone agrees with Senator Usman’s perspective. Obiora Ifoh, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, strongly disputed her claims. He argued that the Caretaker Committee led by Usman is no longer valid and therefore has no authority to issue threats or demands.

Ifoh accused Usman and her allies of attempting to destabilize the party. He emphasized that the Labour Party remains united under Julius Abure’s leadership, with all members focused on securing a victory in the 2027 elections. It’s clear that Ifoh believes Abure is the right person to steer the party through these turbulent times.

  • In his response, Ifoh declared, “Right now, there’s only one Labour Party, and it’s under the leadership of Comrade Julius Abure. Those who want to disrupt the peace process he’s initiated are the ones behind this attempt to drag us backward. Let me tell you something: genuine members of our great party are moving forward and won’t be swayed by the antics of a few who’ve chosen to play politics with our unity.”

It’s a heated debate, and both sides are digging in their heels. As the Labour Party continues to navigate these challenges, one thing is certain: the next few months will be critical in shaping its future. Will they overcome these internal divisions, or will the party fracture under the weight of its own conflicts? Only time will tell.
