A Vision for Change: The Patriots Plan to Transform Nigeria’s Constitution

Naija News has learned that a distinguished group of Nigerians, known as The Patriots, is gearing up for a crucial meeting with the leadership of the National Assembly in April 2025. This meeting aims to push for the creation of a new democratic Nigerian Constitution. The Patriots, led by former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Emeka Anyaoku, have been vocal advocates for a constitutional overhaul, and this meeting is a significant step in their mission.

Before this, The Patriots had already met with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on August 9, 2024. During that session, the group passionately reiterated the need for a fresh look at the country's governing document. Their argument is simple yet powerful: the current 1999 Constitution is outdated and has contributed to the nation's struggles with hardship, corruption, and insecurity. The Patriots believe that a new Constitution, crafted with input from all Nigerians, could address these challenges and pave the way for a brighter future.

Who Are The Patriots?

The Patriots is a coalition of some of Nigeria's most respected figures, including Ike Nwachukwu, Tanko Yakasai, Olusegun Osoba, Alani Akinrinade, and others. These individuals have dedicated themselves to ensuring that the voices of all Nigerians are heard in the creation of a new Constitution. They argue that the current Constitution does not adequately represent the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people, particularly the marginalized and underprivileged.

  • General Secretary of The Patriots, Olawale Okunniyi, recently highlighted the group's mission during a statement at the 20th memorial anniversary of the group’s founding chairman, FRA Williams. He emphasized the importance of amending Sections 8 and 9 of the 1999 Constitution to include provisions for a referendum or plebiscite. This would empower Nigerians to demand changes to the Constitution whenever necessary, ensuring that it remains relevant and responsive to the nation's evolving needs.

    A Constitution for All Nigerians

Okunniyi was candid in his criticism of the current Constitution, labeling it as "warped" and "crafted in corruption." He pointed out that only a tiny fraction of Nigerians—about two percent—benefit from it, leaving the majority struggling under its limitations. He stressed the urgent need for a Constitution that works for every Nigerian, especially the poorest and most vulnerable. "A people’s democratic Constitution," he said, "is the key to overcoming the hardships, corruption, and insecurity that plague our nation."

The Patriots are not just talking about change; they are actively working toward it. In addition to their upcoming meeting with the National Assembly leadership, they have planned zonal advocacy outreach programs to kick off in April. These programs will engage traditional rulers, influential leaders, labor leaders, and thought leaders from all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. The goal is to build a broad-based coalition of support for their constitutional reform agenda and ensure that the voices of all Nigerians are heard.

    Lessons from the Past

Okunniyi also expressed regret over the missed opportunity during former President Goodluck Jonathan's administration. Specifically, he criticized the failure to send the 2014 National Conference report as a bill to the National Assembly, where a referendum could have been held. However, he remains optimistic that the insights gained from the 2014 conference, along with earlier constitutions like the 1963, 1979, 1989, and 1993 versions, will provide valuable guidance in drafting a new Constitution. "We can learn from the past to build a better future," he remarked.

    A Legacy of Advocacy

At a recent memorial event honoring FRA Williams, several prominent figures, including Prof. Anthony Kila, Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo Dosumu, Fafa Dan-Princewill, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Ezenwa, and Kayode Williams, lent their voices to The Patriots' cause. Kayode Williams, the son of FRA Williams, expressed confidence in the group's ability to achieve its goals. He believes that President Tinubu shares their vision for true federalism and will support their efforts to create a Constitution that reflects the will of the Nigerian people.

In conclusion, The Patriots remain steadfast in their commitment to transforming Nigeria's constitutional framework. They believe that a new, democratic Constitution is not just a dream but a necessity for addressing the nation's enduring challenges. As they continue their advocacy efforts, they invite all Nigerians to join them in this critical mission for the betterment of the country.
