6th Division of the Nigerian Army Targets Illegal Oil Activities in Niger Delta

Hey there, friends. If you're wondering what's happening in the Niger Delta, here's some news you won't want to miss. The 6th Division of the Nigerian Army has just made a significant move against illegal oil refineries. They’ve dismantled 19 illegal refineries, arrested 12 suspects, and seized a staggering 138,000 liters of stolen petroleum products. This operation isn’t just about numbers; it’s a major step toward securing the region and combating oil theft.

Week-Long Operation Brings Results

This success story didn't happen overnight. It was the result of a week-long operation conducted by the Nigerian Army in collaboration with other security agencies. The operation spanned several communities in the Niger Delta region, where illegal oil activities have long been a problem. By working together, these agencies have managed to deliver a powerful blow to the illegal oil trade, sending a clear message to those involved that the days of operating unchecked are numbered.

Lt. Col. Jonah Danjuma Speaks Out

Acting Deputy Director of the 6th Division Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Jonah Danjuma, shared the details of this operation in a statement from Port Harcourt. He explained that from March 17 to March 23, 2025, troops conducted a series of operations across Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Delta states. Their efforts were relentless, and the results speak for themselves.

  • Danjuma highlighted, “Troops of the 6th Division of the Nigerian Army, building on previous operational successes, carried out intensive operations during this period. These efforts resulted in the destruction of 19 artisanal refineries, the arrest of 12 suspected oil thieves, and the confiscation of over 138,000 liters of stolen petroleum products across the Joint Operations Area.”

    Key Achievements in Rivers State

In Rivers State, intelligence-driven actions proved crucial. Troops intercepted a tanker loaded with 60,000 liters of stolen crude oil along the Apajo-Iwoji-Iwofe road in Obio Akpor Local Government Area. The driver, upon noticing the troops, abandoned the truck and fled. A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered multiple license plates, indicating the tanker might have been used in several illegal operations.

Clearance operations in the Imo River area were equally impactful. The troops not only destroyed several illegal refineries but also recovered 64 drum pots and 15 drum receivers containing over 4,500 liters of stolen products. This was a significant haul that showcases the extent of illegal activities in the region.

Discoveries in Degema and Bonny Island

At Kumufari Creek in Degema Local Government Area, troops stumbled upon an abandoned refining oven and 40 sacks containing more than 1,200 liters of stolen crude oil. Meanwhile, in the Okotokolomabia/Okoloma Lounge area of Bonny Island, they uncovered abandoned equipment, including a 6 KVA generator, a welding machine, five drilling machines, two drilling cups, and various bolts and nuts. This discovery suggests that the illegal operators had been planning more extensive operations before being caught.

    Targeting Illegal Bunkering Camps

The operation extended to illegal bunkering camps in Rivers and Bayelsa states. At Joinkrama 4 and Biseni, troops destroyed illegal refining sites, recovering over 25,000 liters of stolen crude and 850 liters of illegally refined Automotive Gasoline Oil. In addition, over 1,550 liters of stolen crude were recovered from cellophane bags on the waterways. These actions demonstrate the army's commitment to eradicating illegal oil activities and restoring order to the region.

This operation is more than just a military exercise; it’s a step toward ensuring the safety and prosperity of the Niger Delta region. The Nigerian Army's efforts remind us that with determination and collaboration, we can tackle even the most challenging issues. Let’s hope this is just the beginning of a brighter future for the region.
