Similarly, staff from the Eko Electricity Distribution Company claimed they were attacked by suspected Nigerian Army personnel under similar circumstances. These incidents sparked outrage and criticism, leading to accusations that the military was overstepping its boundaries.

However, the Nigeria Defence Headquarters has strongly refuted these allegations. In response to a critical editorial that condemned the military's alleged misconduct, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, stepped in to clarify the situation. He described the editorial as being "economical with the truth," arguing that the claims were not only misleading but also an unfair portrayal of the military’s role and intentions.

General Gusau addressed the editorial's claim that the military had been "riding roughshod on civilians and private enterprises." He firmly rejected this notion, stating that it misrepresented the facts and unfairly targeted the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, along with other service chiefs. According to Gusau, the editorial attempted to tarnish the reputation of these leaders by implying they condone misconduct within the ranks.

He emphasized that such accusations were baseless and unjust. "The editorial’s attempt to vilify or cast aspersion on the person of General Musa and the Service Chiefs as tacitly supporting impunity is an unfair and inaccurate representation," Gusau stated. He further criticized the media outlet for not reaching out to the military hierarchy for clarification before publishing such a scathing critique.

General Gusau pointed out that had the newspaper consulted with military authorities, they might have gained a more balanced understanding of the situation. He argued, "It would have been more appropriate to consult with the military hierarchy before passing such a sweeping judgment." This call for dialogue highlights the importance of responsible journalism in ensuring accurate and fair reporting, especially when sensitive topics like national security are involved.

He also reminded everyone that the military has its own internal systems to address misconduct. "We have military police and Intelligence Corps, saddled with the task of thorough investigation and disciplining erring military personnel," he explained. By emphasizing these mechanisms, Gusau reassured the public that the military remains committed to upholding the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
