Atiku Abubakar And Allies Unite To Challenge President Tinubu In 2027 Election

A New Coalition Emerges to Challenge the Current Regime
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, along with a formidable lineup of leaders from the All Progressives Congress (APC), has officially unveiled a coalition designed to take on President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 general election. This coalition is shaping up to be a powerful force, bringing together some of the most respected figures in Nigerian politics. The goal is clear: to present a united front against the current administration and restore the principles of democracy and accountability.
During a press conference held on Thursday, Naija News reported that key opposition figures made their presence felt, including Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, who was represented by Yunusa Tanko. This event marked a significant moment in Nigerian political history, showcasing the strength and unity of those who believe in a brighter future for the country.
Who’s Joining the Fight?
The coalition is made up of some of Nigeria’s most influential political figures. Among those in attendance were former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal; former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai; National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties, Peter Ahmeh; and Convenor of the Alternative, Segun Showunmi. These leaders, along with many others, are committed to ensuring that the voices of the Nigerian people are heard and respected.

While some notable figures, such as former Governors Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, and the immediate past National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Adamu, were unable to attend, they expressed their support for the coalition’s mission. Atiku confirmed this during the press conference, emphasizing the widespread backing for this new movement.
Atiku’s Vision for the Future
Atiku Abubakar took the stage to address the nation, reading a statement that resonated with many Nigerians. When asked if this gathering was the beginning of a coalition to challenge President Tinubu in 2027, Atiku didn’t mince words: “Yes, this is the birth of the coalition of opposition ahead of 2027.” His words carried the weight of a man who has spent decades fighting for justice and fairness in Nigerian politics.
Earlier in the press conference, Atiku and his allies called on Nigerians, particularly members of the National Assembly, to reject President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. This move, they argued, was not only unconstitutional but also a threat to the democratic process that Nigeria holds dear.
A Call to Defend Democracy
Atiku passionately stated: “We have come together to address the dangerous and unconstitutional actions taken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on March 18, 2025. The declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State and the illegal suspension of the democratically elected Governor, Deputy Governor, and the State House of Assembly is a direct attack on the principles of democracy.”
“This action is not only unlawful but also a clear subversion of democracy and imposition of autocratic federal control over a duly elected state government. We strongly condemn this development and call on all Nigerians of good conscience to resist this brazen assault on the constitution of our country and the institutions of our democracy.”
“Mr President’s illegal and unconstitutional proclamation was presumably driven by the protracted insidious political crisis in Rivers State, which culminated in the recent ruling of the Supreme Court. Naturally, we expected all parties to the dispute to follow laid-down procedures, and in good faith, to promptly implement the judgment of the highest court of the land.”

“We note that despite provocative statements and belligerent attitude of his opponents, Governor Fubara had demonstrated goodwill and appeared disposed to the implementation of the ruling of the Supreme Court. However, rather than rise above the fray, the president yielded to petty favoritism and betrayed the oath that he solemnly swore to before God and man, which was to ‘do right to all manner of people, according to law, without fear or favor, affection or ill-will.’”
“If President Tinubu had conveniently disguised his true intentions in the past, his broadcast to the nation on 18th March 2025 betrayed his bias and fell far below the standard of comportment expected from his exalted office.”
With these words, Atiku and his coalition are drawing a line in the sand. They are calling on all Nigerians to stand together and defend the values that make their nation strong. The road ahead may be challenging, but with unity and determination, they believe a brighter future is within reach.
