Another Explosion Strikes Oil Facility in Rivers State

Listen up, folks. Just when you thought things were settling down, another major explosion has rocked the oil infrastructure in Rivers State. Barely a week after a devastating blast on the Trans Niger Pipeline in Bodo, Gokana Local Government Area, a new incident has occurred at the Soku oil facility in Akuku Toru Local Government Area. This latest development is raising serious concerns about the safety and security of oil installations in the region.

What Happened at the Soku Oil Facility?

According to Naija News, the explosion at the Soku oil facility happened early Sunday morning. The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria), a grassroots NGO with a strong presence in the Niger Delta, confirmed the incident. Their youth volunteers were the first to alert the organization about the explosion, which was accompanied by massive fireballs that lit up the sky. The facility, operated by Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited, remains inaccessible, making it challenging to determine the exact cause of the explosion.

The situation is still unfolding, and the fire is ongoing as of this report. While investigators scramble to piece together what happened, speculation is already swirling. Possible causes being considered include equipment failure, sabotage, or even a deliberate attack. Whatever the reason, one thing is clear: these incidents are becoming alarmingly frequent.

This is the third major explosion in Rivers State within a week. The first one struck Ogoni, followed by another in the Oga/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area. The frequency of these incidents has not gone unnoticed, with President Bola Tinubu addressing the nation in a nationwide broadcast on March 18. In response to the escalating violence, the President declared a six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, citing the repeated attacks on the region’s oil infrastructure as a primary concern.

The President’s response didn’t stop there. In a bold move, he suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The reason? The governor’s inability to ensure the protection of critical oil facilities. It’s a tough call, but it underscores the gravity of the situation.

    Call for Accountability and Action

YEAC-Nigeria is urging for swift action and accountability in the wake of the latest explosion. The group has called for an immediate investigation into the incident, demanding that the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) conduct a Joint Investigation Visit (JIV). The goal is to determine the root cause of the explosion and hold those responsible accountable under the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), 2021.

In their statement, YEAC-Nigeria emphasized the importance of holding perpetrators accountable. “Perpetrators of this crime must be held accountable in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), 2021,” they stressed. The group is pushing for swift action to address the growing violence and instability in the region, ensuring that justice is served and the safety of oil facilities is prioritized.

As the investigation continues, one thing is certain: the people of Rivers State and beyond are watching closely. The eyes of the nation are on this unfolding crisis, hoping for answers and solutions that will bring peace and stability to the region. Stay tuned for updates as we continue to monitor the situation.
