Obi Ezekwesili Slams National Assembly for Ignoring Sexual Harassment Claims

Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has taken a strong stance against the National Assembly, criticizing its failure to conduct a thorough and independent investigation into the sexual harassment allegations against Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. Ezekwesili argues that the Senate's decision to overlook these accusations has not only disgraced Nigerians but also undermined the principles of justice and transparency in the country.

Why This Matters: A Disgrace to Nigerian Democracy

Obi Ezekwesili expressed her deep disappointment over the Senate's refusal to address the allegations properly. She believes that by dismissing the claims without due process, the lawmakers have set a dangerous precedent, one that undermines the rights of women and weakens the foundation of Nigerian democracy. This situation highlights a systemic issue where those in power are allowed to evade accountability, leaving ordinary citizens disillusioned and questioning the integrity of their leaders.

A Reaction to The Economist's Report

Ezekwesili voiced her frustrations in response to a recent report by The Economist, which painted a grim picture of the Nigerian political landscape as being hostile to women. In her post on X, she emphasized that the Senate's refusal to investigate the allegations against Akpabio was a glaring example of the problems highlighted in the report. "Here’s @TheEconomist in yet another post on the shame brought upon Nigeria and Nigerians by @Senator_Akpabio @NGRSenate by their brazen refusal to provide an opportunity for an independent investigation and open/ transparent public hearing," she wrote.

Ezekwesili drew attention to a similar case involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who faced an unfair investigation by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions. Following a heated argument with the Senate President over seating arrangements, Akpoti was referred to this committee, which recommended a six-month suspension and other severe penalties. Ezekwesili described this as a "Kangaroo process of injustice," pointing out that these punishments violated the Constitution yet were still approved by the Senate. Instead of addressing Akpoti's sexual harassment claims, the Senate and its president embarked on a smear campaign against her, further exacerbating the problem.

A Plot to Recall Senator Akpoti

The situation worsened as Ezekwesili revealed a sinister plot to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti through bribery. The lawmakers allegedly attempted to bribe her constituents to support the recall, but thankfully, the majority of them rejected the offer. Ezekwesili condemned this act, calling the lawmakers "nation-destroyers" who operate with impunity, stifling democracy and disregarding the rule of law. She urged all reasonable citizens to stand up against such misconduct before it's too late. "It is time for all reasonable Citizens to stand up to them and all the way before they totally destroy whatever is left of Nigeria," she passionately stated.

In conclusion, Ezekwesili's call to action serves as a wake-up call for Nigerians to demand accountability and transparency from their leaders. The ongoing issues within the National Assembly highlight the urgent need for reform and a commitment to justice, especially in cases involving sexual harassment and the rights of women.
