Yoruba Activist Sunday Igboho Issues Strong Warning to Sheikh Ahmad Gumi

In a bold and clear message, Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, better known as Sunday Igboho, has sent a direct warning to prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi. In a statement delivered on Wednesday by his spokesperson, Olayomi Koiki, Igboho urged Gumi to refrain from making dismissive remarks about the Yoruba self-determination movement. Igboho emphasized that the Yoruba people’s journey toward independence is unique and should not be compared to other regional struggles, particularly those tied to secessionist movements.

Naija News learned that Igboho’s warning followed critical comments made by Sheikh Gumi, who recently downplayed the chances of any secessionist movement succeeding in Nigeria. Gumi, a respected mediator in talks with bandits, equated the push for the Biafra and Oduduwa Republics with insurgency, labeling those advocating for these causes as "miscreants." He further claimed that most Nigerians value national unity, pointing to high voter turnout in elections as proof of this sentiment.

Igboho, however, strongly disagreed with Gumi’s stance. He argued that the Yoruba people’s demand for self-determination is deeply rooted in serious challenges like escalating insecurity, crippling economic hardship, and a governance system that has repeatedly failed them. In his response, Igboho reiterated the movement’s unwavering commitment to its goals, emphasizing the widespread support it enjoys among the Yoruba population.
