Tinubu’s Emergency Rule: A Necessary Move To Restore Peace In Rivers State

Ex-Deputy Speaker Endorses Tinubu’s Emergency Rule in Rivers State
Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chibudom Nwuche, recently voiced his full support for President Bola Tinubu’s bold move to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State. In a candid conversation with journalists in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Nwuche passionately explained how this intervention was crucial in averting a looming crisis that could have spiraled into chaos and violence across the region. The situation, he pointed out, had already taken a toll on governance and scared away potential investors.
For over a year, Rivers State had been grappling with relentless political instability. This instability not only disrupted the daily lives of its residents but also cast a shadow of uncertainty over the state's future. Nwuche emphasized the urgency of the National Assembly's swift approval of the emergency rule to ensure the state could regain its footing and foster a sense of security and stability.
A Timely Intervention Preventing Anarchy
“Let me tell you something: President Tinubu’s decision was not just timely—it was absolutely necessary,” Nwuche explained. “Without this intervention, Rivers State would have descended into complete lawlessness. The prolonged crisis had businesses shutting down left and right, and governance was in shambles. With the declaration of the state of emergency, we’ve seen a significant restoration of order, and that’s exactly what we needed.”

The former Deputy Speaker highlighted the alarming rise in security threats, particularly the audacity of criminals targeting critical oil infrastructure. He stressed that tolerating such acts of sabotage would have catastrophic consequences for the nation. “We cannot, and will not, allow criminals to blow up pipelines and threaten our national assets. It’s simply unacceptable,” he firmly stated.
Encouraging Amicable Dispute Resolution
Nwuche urged political stakeholders in Rivers State to seize this opportunity to resolve their differences amicably and reduce tensions. He believes that this period of emergency rule should serve as a platform for constructive dialogue, where leaders can come together and prioritize the welfare of the state and its people. “We need to tailor our democracy to fit the unique realities of Nigeria. Blindly imitating foreign models won’t solve our problems,” he added.
In his appeal to the National Assembly, Nwuche emphasized the importance of approving the emergency rule without delay. “This is not just about governance; it’s about the future of Rivers State. Our political leaders must use this time wisely to settle disputes within the boundaries of the law and ensure the state’s best interests are always at the forefront,” he urged.
Rejecting Ethnic Bias Claims
Nwuche was quick to dismiss allegations of ethnic bias in the crisis, asserting that Rivers people have a long history of peaceful coexistence. “Let’s be clear: elections in Rivers were never fought along ethnic lines. The Ekpeye, Ikwerre, Ogoni, Kalabari, Igbani, and Etche all voted together. This crisis we’re seeing now is being stoked by external forces who have selfish motives,” he explained.
He further encouraged residents of Rivers State to remain calm and fully support the newly appointed Sole Administrator, Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas (retd.), in his efforts to restore peace and progress. “President Tinubu’s decision was made with the best interests of the Rivers people in mind. I’m calling on everyone to rally behind the new leadership and let stability return to our beloved state,” he concluded.
With these words, Nwuche not only expressed his confidence in the President’s leadership but also reinforced the importance of unity and cooperation in overcoming the challenges facing Rivers State.
