After graduating high school in 1972, he headed to the University of Denver, where he briefly studied political science and cultural anthropology. But college life wasn’t enough to hold him back. Building an Empire: A Career in Hospitality

When Taffer first landed in Los Angeles, he wasn’t exactly sure where his path would lead. He started out as a drummer, playing music while bartending in West Hollywood. But it wasn’t long before he realized his true passion lay in bar management. In 1989, he took the leap and opened his own bar. His career really took off when he became the manager of the Troubadour, one of the most iconic bars in the U.S. During this time, Taffer also flexed his entrepreneurial muscles by patenting new music technology and creating the concept for the NFL Sunday Ticket, which became a massive success for both him and the NFL. His contributions earned him a spot on the board of NFL Enterprises for years.

The Comeback Kid: Returning to Bars

By 2010, Taffer was back in the bar business, this time as the president of the Nightclub and Bar Media Group. This role gave him control over Nightclub & Bar Magazine and the annual Nightclub & Bar Convention. It was a natural fit for someone who had spent so much of his career in the nightlife industry.

Bar Rescue: Helping Bars Survive and Thrive

In 2011, Spike TV brought Taffer into the spotlight with the launch of Bar Rescue. On the show, Taffer travels across the country, helping struggling bars get back on their feet. Many of the bars he’s worked with have seen incredible improvements thanks to his guidance. But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Some bar owners have claimed that the show is scripted, with producers asking them to exaggerate their financial struggles for dramatic effect. Despite these criticisms, the show has been a huge success, and bars that appear on it often benefit from the exposure and Taffer’s expertise.

In 2018, he became a host on CBS’s Face the Truth, and in 2019, he starred in the Paramount Network spinoff Marriage Rescue, where he used Gestalt therapy to help couples work through their issues.
