Edo State Sees Leadership Change in Police Force After Tragic Incident

In a significant move that has sent ripples through the law enforcement community, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has relieved Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimenyin of her duties as the Commissioner of Police for Edo State. This decision comes just days after the shocking killings of 16 Hausa-Fulani travelers in Uromi, located in the Esan North-East Local Government Area, on March 27, 2025. The dismissal has been directly linked to the incident, sparking discussions about accountability and leadership in the wake of such tragedies.

Enter Monday Agbonika: The New Face of Edo State's Police Leadership

According to Naija News, the PSC has swiftly appointed Monday Agbonika as the new Commissioner of Police for Edo State. Agbonika steps into the role at a critical time, following the sudden departure of Betty Otimenyin, who served as the 49th Commissioner of Police in the state. Otimenyin had only been in the position since January 16, 2025, succeeding Peter Umoru Ozigi, who retired on January 25, 2025. The timing of her dismissal underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for leadership change.

In a detailed statement released by the PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, it was revealed that Monday Agbonika previously served as the Commissioner of Police (Mounted Troop) and Force Equitation Officer at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. His appointment signals a fresh start for the Edo State Police Force, with a mandate to tackle the state's pressing security challenges head-on.

This directive highlights the PSC's commitment to fostering accountability and effective communication within the police force.

Agbonika's Assurance: A Commitment to Upholding the Law

In response to the PSC’s expectations, Agbonika assured that he would adhere strictly to the relevant laws and regulations in carrying out his duties. He also expressed his intention to rely on the guidance and support of the Inspector General of Police, a move that reflects his dedication to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
