Nigeria's Commitment to Tackling Organized Immigration Crime

Let me tell you something, folks. The Federal Government of Nigeria isn’t playing games when it comes to dealing with Organized Immigration Crime (OIC). They’re serious, and they’re all in. This isn’t just about throwing up walls or closing borders. No, it’s about smart strategies, international teamwork, and securing borders in a way that makes sense for everyone.

A Global Conversation on Border Security

On a recent Tuesday, the Border Security Summit was held at the prestigious Lancaster House in London, United Kingdom. Hosted by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, this event brought together leaders from all over the world. And guess who was there? None other than Nigeria’s very own Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. He didn’t hold back when it came to talking about the importance of stronger global partnerships and enhanced data sharing.

“We need more data sharing and better collaborations to make sure we don’t just solve the problem but we stop the problem from happening,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo declared. He went on to stress that countries in the Sahel and West African sub-region need to step up their cooperation game. This isn’t just about one nation doing its part; it’s about all of us coming together to manage borders effectively and share information that can save lives and protect nations.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo described the summit as not just timely but impactful. He pointed out that it’s not enough to simply react to issues as they arise. Instead, nations need to be proactive and get ahead of the problems before they spiral out of control. “The major takeaway from this summit is proactiveness and not just being reactive, as countries are now more poised to criminalizing irregular migration,” he explained. “This summit is an impactful one because it brings an opportunity for ministers in border control to make sure we are all able to manage our borders to secure our countries.”

He made it crystal clear that OIC isn’t just a Nigerian problem or even an African problem. It’s a global issue that affects us all. And when it comes to global problems, the solution is always going to involve shared responsibility and collective action. No one nation can do it alone.

Nigeria's Strategic Approach to Border Security

Dr. Tunji-Ojo didn’t shy away from acknowledging the seriousness of border-related crimes. He laid out the strategic steps that Nigeria has taken to strengthen its border security systems. “The Federal Government of Nigeria has a border control solution because Nigeria is not just a destination point but a transit country. We have automated our solutions as there are more measures in place to ensure the borders are secured and to ensure irregular migration is brought to an end,” he stated. “We can’t afford to lose the battle before we start it, and so we know that with this kind of summit, as a united front, we will effectively combat this menace.”

Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria has invested heavily in migration management and border security frameworks. It’s not just about throwing money at the problem; it’s about using that money wisely to implement real solutions.

Between 2023 and 2025, Nigeria has taken significant steps to upgrade its border surveillance technology. The goal? To cover more communities and procure additional operational vehicles to effectively monitor its vast border areas. These measures aren’t just about patrolling borders; they’re about stopping trans-border crime and irregular migration in its tracks.

The London summit, which brought together delegates from around 40 countries, was designed to foster greater international collaboration. It’s all about addressing the growing threat of Organized Immigration Crime and strengthening collective responses to global migration challenges. This isn’t just a meeting; it’s a movement toward a safer, more secure world.
