Epiphany Azinge Appeals for Acknowledgment of the Asaba Massacre

Let’s talk about something that really matters: justice, healing, and moving forward. The Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Highness Epiphany Azinge, recently made an emotional plea to the Federal Government. During a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, Azinge emphasized the need for the government to formally acknowledge the Asaba massacre of 1967 and offer an apology for the devastating events that unfolded during the Nigerian Civil War. This isn’t just about history—it’s about healing the wounds that have lingered for far too long.

Why This Matters: The Pain of the Past

Now, let’s take a step back and understand what happened. On October 7, 1967, federal troops, after reclaiming the town from Biafran forces, encountered a group of unarmed civilians. These civilians, hopeful and trusting, had come out in a peace procession to welcome the soldiers. Instead of being embraced, they were met with tragedy. Men, women, and children were killed in a brutal act that has left scars on the hearts of survivors and their families. This massacre remains one of the darkest moments in Nigeria’s history, and the people of Asaba have been seeking recognition and justice ever since.

A Royal Voice for Healing

Azinge didn’t mince words during the meeting. He explained that acknowledging the atrocity would be a crucial step toward healing the wounds left by the event. He said, “Among other requests, we mentioned to him the massacre of Asaba people in 1967 and that our people need some apology if need be in that regard.” It’s not just about saying sorry—it’s about recognizing the pain and moving toward reconciliation. This is the kind of leadership we need: someone who speaks truth and advocates for justice.

But Azinge’s vision doesn’t stop at addressing the past. He also spoke about the need for more federal presence in Asaba. Specifically, he highlighted the glaring absence of essential infrastructure, like a federal university. He expressed this concern by saying, “Asaba remains the only state capital in Nigeria without a federal university. We need institutions in our locality, and that for us is a major concern.” It’s a valid point. For a community to thrive, it needs opportunities for education and growth. This is about investing in the future of Asaba and its people.

Optimism and Support for the Tinubu Administration

Despite the challenges Nigeria faces, Azinge expressed optimism about the Tinubu administration’s commitment to national development. He acknowledged that governing a country as large and diverse as Nigeria isn’t easy, but he believes the President is on the right track. Azinge said, “There might be some hiccups, but on the whole, we score him highly in that regard, and we pray for him. It is a very difficult country to govern. There will always be criticisms here and there, but I believe he is on the right track, and we wish him the very best.” That’s a powerful statement of support, and it shows that even in the face of challenges, there’s hope for progress.

Gratitude and Progress: Federal Initiatives in Delta State

Azinge also took the opportunity to express gratitude for the federal initiatives that are already making a difference in Delta State. He specifically highlighted the ongoing construction of the access road to the Niger Bridge and the routing of a gas pipeline through Asaba and Awka. He noted, “We acknowledged and appreciated some of the gestures extended by the federal government to our area, especially the access road to the Niger Bridge and the passing of a gas line through Asaba to Awka, all of which are in progress.” These projects are vital for the development of the region and will bring significant benefits to the people of Asaba.

A Visit of Solidarity and Hope

Describing the meeting with President Tinubu as both a thank-you and a solidarity visit, Azinge recalled a previous delegation led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who represented the President at the burial of his predecessor, the 13th Asagba of Asaba. Azinge concluded by saying, “On the whole, it turned out to be a wonderful visit. He appreciated our coming and indicated that whenever he visits the South-South, he will make a stop in Asaba.” This kind of engagement is what builds trust and fosters unity. It’s about showing up, listening, and working together for a brighter future.
