NDLEA Strikes Again: Thwarting Drug Smugglers In Nigeria

Breaking News: NDLEA Busts Smuggler at Kano Airport
Listen up, folks. In a dramatic turn of events, operatives from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have made a significant arrest at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. A 42-year-old woman from India, identified as Neetu Neetu, was intercepted trying to smuggle 72 parcels of heroin cleverly disguised as chocolates. Can you believe that? She thought she could slip through with this sweet deception, but the NDLEA wasn't having any of it.
These 72 packets of heroin, each sealed in wafer wraps and masquerading as chocolates, weighed a staggering 11 kilograms in total. This wasn't just a bag of candy; it was a dangerous haul that could have wreaked havoc if it had reached its destination.
How It Went Down
According to a statement delivered to Naija News on Sunday by Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, this interception happened during the inward clearance of Qatar Airways flight QR1431. The flight had arrived from Bangkok, Thailand, via Vietnam and Doha, on Friday, 14th March 2025.

The NDLEA, tipped off by reliable intelligence, conducted a meticulous search of Neetu’s luggage. Their efforts paid off when they discovered the heroin hidden in plain sight among what appeared to be ordinary chocolates. This arrest highlights a disturbing trend where drug trafficking organizations are increasingly recruiting foreign nationals, including white women, to smuggle illicit drugs through Nigerian borders.
NDLEA's Technological Edge
But here's the thing: the NDLEA isn't just sitting back and letting these criminals run rampant. With the help of cutting-edge technology and proactive intelligence, they've been able to foil such attempts effectively. Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), the Chairman and CEO of NDLEA, praised the agency’s vigilance, underscoring their commitment to keeping Nigeria safe from drug abuse.
More Arrests Across the Country
It wasn't just Kano where the NDLEA made waves. In a separate operation on Thursday, 20th March, a 45-year-old man named Michael Ogundele was arrested in Kano with a 50-litre steel gas cylinder. But wait, there's more. When inspected with welding tools, they discovered 50,000 pills of tramadol 225mg hidden inside the cylinder. Talk about hiding in plain sight.
On Wednesday, 19th March, another arrest was made in Kano. A 40-year-old man, Sunday Ogar, was apprehended with 27kg of skunk, a strain of cannabis. And the very next day, on Tuesday, 18th March, Khadijah Abdullahi, also 40, was nabbed in the Lungun Bulala Yalwa area with 424 bottles of codeine-based syrup.
NDLEA's Widespread Efforts
Meanwhile, in Lagos, the NDLEA continued their relentless pursuit of drug traffickers. Olumuyiwa Kolawole and Samod Adisa were arrested with 67.5kg of skunk in Mushin. In the Anifowoshe area of Mushin, a staggering 100.8kg of the same drug was recovered from two suspects who were trying to flee. On the same day, Isah Idris was apprehended in Apapa with 4.5kg of skunk, 600 grams of tramadol 225mg, and 30 litres of codeine syrup. Yet another suspect, Yahaya Mohamed, was arrested in Ikotun with various quantities of cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine.
NDLEA's Campaign Against Drug Abuse
But the NDLEA's efforts don't stop at arrests. Across Nigeria, NDLEA commands and formations are actively involved in the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign. They're conducting sensitization lectures in schools, markets, workplaces, and religious centers to educate the public on the dangers of drug abuse. These initiatives have taken place at Chrisland School in Lagos, Hakimi Secondary School in Niger State, Marist Comprehensive College in Anambra State, and Government Day Secondary Schools in Sokoto and Adamawa States, among many others.
