Rotimi Amaechi Hits Back at Tinubu Over Rivers State Suspensions

Let’s get real here. Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, is not holding back. In a bold statement released on Wednesday, he has taken dead aim at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to suspend Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and every single member of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Amaechi didn’t sugarcoat it—this move, he says, is “undemocratic, unconstitutional, and a brazen violation of Nigeria’s Constitution.” He went further, urging the National Assembly, fellow state governors, and other key players to stand up and reject what he called an “illegal power grab.”

Amaechi's Legal Argument: Where Did Tinubu Go Wrong?

Naija News has learned that Amaechi laid out a clear legal argument against Tinubu’s actions. He pointed out that the President overstepped his constitutional boundaries by suspending elected state officials. According to Amaechi, the proper process for removing a governor is outlined in Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution—a process that involves impeachment, not a presidential decree. The former governor emphasized that this isn’t just a matter of procedure; it’s about safeguarding the democratic principles that Nigeria has fought so hard to uphold.

And here’s the kicker: Amaechi accused Tinubu of misusing Section 305 of the Constitution. This section does allow the President to declare a state of emergency in extreme situations, but Amaechi argued that it doesn’t give him carte blanche to dismantle elected branches of government. “The President doesn’t have the power to dissolve officials or dissolve the legislature,” Amaechi insisted, making it crystal clear where he stands on the issue.

Amaechi wasn’t done there. He accused certain political forces of orchestrating a takeover in Rivers State, undermining the very essence of democracy. He urged all Nigerians, regardless of their political leanings, to rise up against what he described as an “audacious violation” of the Constitution. “This isn’t just about Rivers State,” Amaechi warned. “This is about the future of Nigeria’s democracy. If we let this slide, we risk setting a dangerous precedent that could lead us down a slippery slope toward totalitarianism.”

In his statement, Amaechi expressed solidarity with the governors who have already spoken out against the suspension. He encouraged other governors and lawmakers to unite, calling for a collective rejection of Tinubu’s actions. “We must send a clear message to the President: this illegality cannot stand. It’s time for all people of goodwill to stand firm and protect the values we hold dear,” he declared.

Amaechi’s message is clear: this fight isn’t just about one state—it’s about the entire nation. As a former chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), he knows the stakes are high. “If we allow this to happen without resistance, we’re not just compromising Rivers State—we’re compromising the future of democracy in Nigeria,” he warned.
