Tinubu Calls Out Fubara Over Rivers Assembly Complex Demolition

Tinubu Steps In: A Presidential Rebuke for Rivers Governor Fubara
In a nationwide address on Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu took a firm stance against Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, expressing strong disapproval over the demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly. This move has not only sparked nationwide attention but also highlighted the growing political tensions within the state.
Naija News reminds us that this incident unfolded amidst a turbulent political climate in Rivers State, where the state House of Assembly complex was razed to the ground. This demolition occurred as part of an escalating power struggle between Governor Fubara and the legislative arm of the government. The situation has been nothing short of chaotic, with tensions reaching a boiling point over the past several months.
Power Struggles and Political Turmoil
Let’s break it down: The demolition of the Assembly complex didn’t just happen out of the blue. It was a direct result of an impeachment attempt initiated by the state legislature, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, against Governor Fubara. This power struggle has been brewing for some time, with both sides digging in their heels and refusing to back down. The governor's decision to demolish the building was seen by many as a bold, albeit controversial, move to assert his authority amidst the chaos.

President Tinubu, in his address, pointed out that the governor, who was behind the demolition, had a responsibility to rebuild the complex. He argued that such actions undermine the democratic process and harm the state’s governance structure. Tinubu’s words were clear: “it is public knowledge that the Governor of Rivers State, for reasons that are hard to justify, demolished the House of Assembly of the state back on December 13, 2023. And here we are, fourteen months later, and the complex still hasn’t been rebuilt.”
A Call for Peaceful Resolution
In his address, President Tinubu shared his frustration over the lack of progress in resolving the crisis. He mentioned that he had personally tried to mediate between the conflicting parties in an effort to find a peaceful resolution. Unfortunately, his efforts, along with those of other well-meaning Nigerians and patriotic groups, have largely fallen on deaf ears. Despite this, Tinubu expressed gratitude to all those who attempted to intervene, acknowledging their good intentions.
“I have made personal interventions between the contending parties for a peaceful resolution of the crisis, but my efforts have been largely ignored by the parties to the crisis,” Tinubu emphasized. “I am also aware that many well-meaning Nigerians, leaders of thought, and patriotic groups have also intervened at various times with the best of intentions to resolve the matter, but all their efforts were also to no avail. Still, I thank them.”
This ongoing saga in Rivers State serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing Nigeria’s democratic system. As the nation continues to navigate these turbulent waters, it’s crucial for leaders to prioritize dialogue and cooperation over confrontation and division. Only then can we hope to see a resolution that benefits all parties involved and strengthens the foundation of our democracy.
