Nigeria's Political Landscape: El-Rufai's Ambitions And The SDP's Stance

SDP Leadership Speaks: No Awareness of El-Rufai's Presidential Ambitions
Hey there, let's dive into what's happening in Nigeria's political scene. The Social Democratic Party (SDP) leadership in the South West has made it crystal clear—they have no knowledge of any move by former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, to join the party with the intention of securing the presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections. This clarification came amid growing speculation about El-Rufai’s political future.
Naija News reported that Mulikat Adeola Akande, the zonal leader of the SDP, addressed this issue on Saturday during an ifta gathering, which brought together all party members from the 11 local government councils within Ibadan city. It was a moment of transparency, and her words carried weight.
Open Doors Policy: SDP Welcomes All, But Rules Must Be Followed
Adeola emphasized that the party is open to anyone who wishes to join, as long as they are willing to play by the rules. Politics, as we all know, is a game of numbers, and defectors must be ready to integrate fully into the party’s ethos. This inclusivity is key to building a strong, diverse political entity that can compete effectively on the national stage.

She reassured party members that tested and trusted candidates will be fielded for elective positions in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 general elections. This commitment to integrity and experience is a message that resonates with the grassroots and highlights the party’s dedication to putting forward the best possible candidates.
Adeola's Journey: From PDP to SDP
Hon. Adeola, who served as the representative for Ogbomoso North/South and Oriire Federal Constituency between 2007 and 2015 on the platform of the PDP, shared her reasons for leaving the party. It was a decision born out of betrayal. She explained, “Politics is a game of numbers, and anyone who wants to join the SDP is welcome, provided they are ready to play by the rules of the party and not with the intention of taking over from those who were there before.”
She added, “As the leader of the SDP in the South West, I am not aware that the intention of the former Governor to join the party is to secure the party’s presidential ticket. My journey in politics has been filled with challenges, but I have always stood by my principles.”
Reflecting on her past experiences, Adeola recounted a particularly bitter episode. “I ran for the Senate, and we worked tirelessly for the current governor of the state, Governor Seyi Makinde. However, while we were working for him, he was working against me. It was a betrayal I had never experienced before, and it was something I couldn’t overlook.”
Mobilizing for the Future: Building a Stronger SDP
Joined by Michael Ogunlade, the Oyo State Chairman of the party, and Akintola Ezekiel, the Director of National Mobilisation and Strategy for the Presidential Candidate of the Action Alliance in the 2023 general elections, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (retd), Adeola encouraged party members to get registered in their respective wards and obtain their voter’s cards. This is a crucial step in preparing for the upcoming elections.
She emphasized, “You don’t just sit down and say you want to win an election and then bring out anyone. We must have the right candidates—those who are tested and trusted, individuals with integrity whose names inspire confidence and reliability. Someone dependable and committed to working for the people, not just for personal gain. These are the qualities we are looking for as we gear up for the 2027 elections.”
