PDP Chairman Takes a Stand: Governor Fubara’s Actions Under Scrutiny

Let’s break it down, folks. The Rivers State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Robinson Ewor, isn’t backing down from recent claims that Governor Siminalayi Fubara neglected to rebuild the demolished House of Assembly Complex. This issue has been making waves, and it’s time to dive deeper into what’s really going on.

As reported by Naija News, President Bola Tinubu, during his state of emergency address, pointed fingers at Governor Fubara, accusing him of failing to restore the Assembly complex. But here’s the twist: Ewor isn’t letting that narrative go unchallenged. In an exclusive interview with Arise News this past Wednesday, Ewor laid out a different story, countering the President’s claims with some hard-hitting facts.

Setting the Record Straight: A Historical Perspective

Ewor made it clear that the issue of Assembly members not utilizing the complex dates back to the tenure of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi. The Assembly complex wasn’t just left in disrepair overnight—it was a long-standing problem that began years ago. Ewor emphasized that by the time President Tinubu declared a state of emergency, the complex was already 90 percent complete. So, the question remains: why the sudden spotlight on Governor Fubara?

  • Let me paint you a clearer picture. Ewor recounted the political turmoil of 2013-2014 when a crisis erupted within the State House of Assembly. He was a member back then and recalled how the chamber was destroyed during that period. As a result, the Assembly had to relocate to the old government house auditorium, where they conducted business for the remainder of Amaechi’s term—roughly two years. This wasn’t an isolated incident, folks. It was part of a larger, more complex narrative.

The Root of the Crisis: A Political Meltdown

Ewor delved deeper into the history, reminding everyone that the initial crisis in 2013-2014 was orchestrated by the then FCT Minister, who led an impeachment attempt with just five members of the House. They stormed the House, accompanied by the police, to evict the speaker. Chaos ensued, and tensions escalated to the point where violence nearly erupted between Chidi Lloyd and Michael Chinda. It was a dark chapter in Rivers State politics, one that left lasting scars.

But here’s the kicker: despite the challenges, progress has been made. Ewor firmly stated that the River State House of Assembly complex is now 80-90% complete. He emphasized that Governor Fubara did indeed take action to address the issue. The project is ongoing, and its completion is just around the corner. So, the claim that Fubara failed to act doesn’t hold water when you look at the bigger picture.

In his own words, Ewor said, “River State politics, in 2013-2014, there was a crisis in the State House of Assembly. I was then a member of the House. Because of that crisis, the hallowed chamber of the State House of Assembly was destroyed, 2013-2014. And for that reason, we could no longer sit in the hallowed chamber. We now moved to the old government house auditorium. We were sitting in the old house auditorium for the rest of the tenure of Rotimi Amaechi, at least for two years. This wasn’t the first time. This wasn’t the first time.

“The first was in 2013-2014, when the same FCT Minister orchestrated an impeachment led by just five members of the House. They came, invaded the House, in company of the police, to evict the speaker. There was crisis. It was because of this crisis that Chidi Lloyd did not nearly killed Michael Chinda. This wasn’t the first time.

“But as we speak today, if you go to the River State House of Assembly, it is 80-90% completion. It’s not as if the Governor didn’t take action. The Governor took action. The project is ongoing. It will be completed in no time.”
